Europe CV Format: Europass, Germany, UK, Italy, Spain & Netherlands
Europe has no single CV format. Europass is the shared standard, but Germany, the UK, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands each have their own expectations. This guide covers the differences that matter.
Europass: the shared European format
Europass is a standard European CV format with fixed sections: personal information, work experience, education and training, personal skills and additional information. It is widely understood across the EU.
Europass is safe and structured, but many recruiters prefer a tailored CV with the same information in a cleaner layout. Either way, keep dates consistent and the structure single-column.
Germany and Italy
German CVs are formal and chronological, usually with a photo, date of birth, nationality and a full education timeline. Italian CVs are also Europass-compatible, with strong emphasis on degrees and language proficiencies.
In both countries, list degrees with full names, institutions and dates, and languages with honest levels.
UK and Netherlands
UK CVs run up to 2 pages with a personal statement, detailed employment history and education. No photo is expected.
Dutch CVs are direct: a 2-line profile, achievements with numbers, and plain language. A photo is not required in either country.
Spain and Sweden
Spanish CVs are chronological with a professional objective and a skills matrix. Swedish CVs are minimalist, with a concise summary, teamwork evidence and verifiable experience.
Across Europe, submit a text-based PDF unless the employer asks for another format. Build it with the free builder, then run the ATS resume checker.
